Phase 6 Hope For Venezuelan Refugees Project Soup Program -
Poverty in Venezuela is an epidemic. According to the ENCOVI Report, the intensity of poverty continued its growing trend, 96% of the households are in poverty, and 79.3% of Venezuelans do not earn enough money to cover their food basket.
2022.
Cristal Montañéz Baylor, Project International Coordinator, talks with Venezuelan refugees and migrants in transit who stop at Punto de Apoyo Hermanos Caminantes Venezolanos y Colombianos for a bowl of soup. They are fleeing the violence, insecurity, threats, and lack of food, medicine, and essential services in Venezuela. They travel on foot from Venezuela to Colombia and other countries, searching for a better and dignified life, carrying their belongings in backpacks. Some of them walk to cities in Colombia, like Bogotá and Calí. The majority plan to walk for weeks to Ecuador and Perú and more than two months to Chile.
One of the men walking to Chile mentioned it is impossible to survive in Venezuela with his pension of $3.00 per month, which is only enough to buy cheese.
The Hope for Venezuelan Refugees Project & Soup Program working in partnership with the volunteers-led food distribution centers and shelters is helping alleviate the food insecurity and hunger affecting Venezuelan refugees and migrants in transit “caminantes.”
